DEBORA FLETCHER

I am the mother of 10 children (eight boys, two girls) and grandmother of three. I was born in Guatemala, and came to the United States to go to college. While raising my children I have fed my passion for learning through formal study (continuous college-level classes for more than 20 years) as well as studying numerous books, attending seminars, and participating on wide-range organizations from gardening to psychology to the plight of refugees. My penchant for service has driven me to bring an organization to help children’s literacy in Guatemala, Co-found and lead Sustainable Families, a nonprofit organization that lobbies the United Nations and its subgroups around the world (to remind the world that the family is the most powerful engine for societal change), and currently help abused and abandoned woman in Jordan

What I Do

Motherhood: purpose, meaning, STEWARDSHIP

Debora prefers nature to take its course as she leads her busy family. In fact, she prefers natural consequences.

“Everyone who lives in the house has a stewardship for a month before we rotate — and the kids have Saturday jobs for a year,” she says. “After 20 years, we’ve figured out how to run our household

When people visit, they don’t realize we have a major chart hiding, color-coded with jobs for each family member.”

Seeing the contrast in her family’s views and those around her put Debora on a path to promoting families while still raising hers. She’s traveled to New York, Ecuador, and other UN and pro-family meetings sharing her message with her Guatemalan accent and perfect English

Now Debora mentors her 10 children, two daughters-in-law, her Sustainable Families teammates and the people she meets in her BYU psychology program and the international policy events where she is bold and friendly in sharing her experiences raising a family in Utah Valley — aka “the best place to raise a family.”

Motherhood Redefined and Reframed

As a message to her daughters, and women everywhere she says, “Children do not make you poor. They do not make you stupid. They do not stop your life. Now you have someone to live for, to learn for, to learn with. Teaching, learning, serving together – one of the reasons my life is so abundant is because I have so many children!” This is family capital

How to develop positive Motherhood

Connecting with your children are powerful, and Debora is thankful for the connections she has in her life with people of many ages because of her children. She is friends with her children’s friends and their parents. One “sign of success” that she is proud of is that “the kids love to come home.”

A HERITAGE OF QUALITY RELATIONSHIPS AND SERVICE

As a child in the early 1970s, I discovered the power of heritage narratives. Unusually inquisitive for my seven years, I sat at a table in the bright, open dining room of my family’s restaurant near Guatemala City. Raven ringlets frame my high bronze brow, and golden brown eyes beam as I listened. My father, Jose Ruano Roca, and his friends share images and accounts of their fight for freedom, of the valor of their people, of a revolution lost. The one that captivated me the most was about her grandmother, a village doctor, whose powers saved her family members even when she wasn’t with them

Executive Motherhood

Marcia Barlow does a  abetter job describing ot: ” Mothers, fathers, and their children engaging in the business of life supported by an extended and intergenerational family network – all working together to create a virtuous web that serves the economic, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of all family members; and ultimately serving communities and nations”

Power, Intelligence, passion into raising children

My life is an example of both the power of family capital and working from a prosperity mentality. I am the fifth child of 10 and I learned to cook over an open fire for 12 people when I was eight years old. I graduated as the valedictorian of my high school, then left Guatemala to attend college in the United States.

While I was attending college, I married, and over the course of 20 years had 10 children and continued my college education one or two classes at a time to “keep my brain exercised” and “as a way to stay connected with the world” as she stayed home to raise her children

What I Do

SPEAKER

Between trips to the state legislature, hosting events at the United Nations, and managing the affairs of her very large family, Debora continues to work on her education in Family Sciences. She raises her voice to share those well learned principles, still determined to become a voice and doctor, of sorts, and help heal her people.

“You can’t be part of the process of bringing solutions in such a hands-on way and not be changed by it. You can’t just put your head back in the sand. We need to encourage women to look at icons and stories from our past, find role models, and help our girls see their potential as women, mothers, students, and influencers. They can be heroes! They can change the future for their families and the world!”

What We Do

COACHING

COACHING on the Seven Steps of Creation is a process to build an idea that can be used in any type of project. It is a process that is based on the belief that creativity needs to be nurtured and not just left to chance.

This process consists of:

– Defining the problem

– Generating ideas

– Evaluating ideas

– Choosing an idea

– Developing the idea into a solution

– Implementing the solution

– Evaluating results

COACHING

REDEFINE AND REFRAME

DESIGN AND CREATE

The first thing to do is to identify the challenge you are facing. Next, think about what your solution will look like. Finally, decide on how you will execute.

Designers and creators have always had a strong influence on how we perceive the world. From the way we dress, to what we eat, to how we communicate with each other, designers and creators are shaping our culture. They are responsible for creating our products and services, shaping our cities, and generating new ideas that drive change.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that helps people understand the thoughts, beliefs and behaviors that contribute to mental health problems. CBT is based on the idea that thoughts, feelings and actions are interconnected. When someone has a problem in one area, it can affect other areas of their life. For example, if someone has panic attacks they may avoid going to places where they feel anxious because they want to avoid having an attack. The goal of cognitive behavior therapy is not only to reduce symptoms but also to help people gain insight into what causes their symptoms and how these symptoms may be connected to other aspects of their lives

ESSENTIAL EMOTIONS

Emotions are a crucial part of the human experience and a key part of our interactions with others.

Dr. Paul Ekman identifies six emotions that are essential to our lives: anger, fear, sadness, happiness, love and surprise. Understanding the fact that these emotions are expressed differently in other cultures help us better understand other people.
